Why is marine cadastral data important for conservation and marine spatial planning?
Marine Cadastral Data Management
The Nature Conservancy’s 2010 Nationwide Comparative Assessment of State-level Marine Cadastral Data in Hawaii consisted of a review of relevant Internet sites. We were not successful in our attempts to make direct contact with state managers of data.
State Data Management: Hawaii’s GIS Coordinating Council (Council) is within the Department of Business and Economic Development in the Office of Planning. The Council and Planning Office serves as the central coordinating body for GIS data in Hawaii, publishing data for download from the Planning Office’s web site and providing a web mapping service through iMap Hawaii. The download site provides a variety of GIS layers including sections on coastal and marine layers, natural resource and environmental layers, and general layers regarding physical features and political boundaries of Hawaii.
GIS Portals
- Hawaii Statewide GIS Program, Office of Planning (web site). Users may download data or use I-Map Hawaii, an interactive online mapping program. A rich collection of data includes layers on ocean and coastal land/water uses, such as Anchorage Areas, Boating Facilities, Cables, Dumping Areas, Explosive Dumping Areas, Offshore Installations, Offshore Sewer Lines, and Ocean Recreation Zones.

Marine Jurisdictional Boundaries

The term submerged lands is used here to refer to tidal waters lying between the high water mark and the seaward extent of the state’s jurisdictional limit, which for most states is three nautical miles (i.e., the Submerged Lands Act Boundary). See the Submerged Lands definitions page for specific terminology used in each state.
