Why is marine cadastral data important for conservation and marine spatial planning?

Marine Cadastral Data Management

The Nature Conservancy’s 2010 Nationwide Comparative Assessment of State-level Marine Cadastral Data in North Carolina included an interview with the State Property Office1 and a review of relevant Internet sites.

State Data Management: The Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (CGIA) is the lead agency for geographic information system (GIS) services and GIS coordination for North Carolina. CGIA utilizes the GIS Inventory to track the status of GIS activities for state and local governments and provides access to state and local government data through NC OneMap.

Marine Cadastre and Supporting Data

Cadastral Reference System: North Carolina does not have a marine cadastre.

Supporting Reference Data

CGIA utilizes the NC OneMap to provide access to state and local government core data sets. CGIA provides immediate access to data through the NC OneMap Viewer and Web Map Service. A list of layers that the CGIA has targeted for these sites can be viewed (web file). The CGIA also provides an ftp site of statewide geospatial data layers that includes state-owned lands, shorelines, lands managed for conservation and open space, and land trust conservation properties as well as an extensive list of orthoimagery and other data.

GIS Portals

The term submerged lands is used here to refer to tidal waters lying between the high water mark and the seaward extent of the state’s jurisdictional limit, which for most states is three nautical miles (i.e., the Submerged Lands Act Boundary). See the Submerged Lands definitions page for specific terminology used in each state.
